Cities of Crime: Game Rules
Welcome to the Cities of Crime RPG board and to our forum-RPG. What follows are the rules and regulations of how we do things around here.
To start with, the games in this forum are designed to be simple to follow. There are threads where you can post character-profiles and biographies, there's information threads about history, weapons, cars and whatnot, and then there's the main game thread.
Main gameplay thread.
Any and all gameplay takes place inside this main thread, located in the Cities of Crime Board. Here is where your character will interact with other characters - where deals, jobs, crimes and other business will go down. To distinguish your posts from other peoples', try and have an avatar or a signature that stands out and makes your posts readily identifiable.
When you're doing a string of alternative postings between you and another player, it may help to quote the other player's last post in your next one (that is, if the postings are separated by the postings of others and the chain is broken), so that others know what your post is responding to, so as to prevent confusion.
Characters
Your character may be either male or female and should be of an adult, or at least mid-teenage level. No kids. You will only control one character at a time, although you are allowed to have other, smaller characters (such as contacts, sweethearts, wives, kids etc. Please note that family-orientated posts should be kept to a minimum).
In your character profile, you should include things such as his or her's name, date and place of birth, weight, height, hair and eye-colour. His or her skills, likes, dislikes and so-forth, as well as a small biography.
When interacting with the character of another player, don't speak for the other player's character - by that, I mean, don't put your words into the mouth of the other player's character - let him write out what he wants his guy to say and you stick to what you want your guy to say. Not adhereing to this rule can cause tangles later on.
Gameplay
Gameplay is simple. Each of your posts is essentially a little story about your character. It can be a job from anything from robbery to collecting protection money to organising a hit. Each post should be of a decent length (at least two or three paragraphs). No one-liners.
Absolutely NO god-modding. Your character is not invincible. You cannot survive fifty attempts on your life and act as if nothing's happened. If someone writes up a hit and your character's killed, sob over it, go to the funeral, and then make a new character.
Related to this - When writing up a hit-post on another player's character, please keep the hit believable. No nuclear warheads or Lancaster bombers flying over his house or other bullshit like that. Keep it to knifings, poisonings, hit-and-runs, drivebys, shootings, strangling, and so-on. If you're adventurous, you can try stuff like chucking the guy off a building or into a furnace or something - but however you kill someone must be within the realms of possibility of what a gangster can do.
Period detail
Each of our games takes place in a certain time-period. You'll need to know a decent amount about 20th century history to play here. Not much, just important dates of wars and other famous events - how stuff like communications, cops, hospitals and whatever worked. Just so that your posts look believeable. If they don't, they'll jarr up the game.
